How to start breastfeeding

The first time you are holding your baby in the delivery´s room is the best moment to breastfeeding. At the beginning, your body produce amounts of a special milk called colostrum that help protect your new born from diseases and infections. The baby's stomach is small, so she only will need small amounts to fill up. As the stomach grows, the milk will change and you will produce more of it.


Turn your baby's body toward you, chest to chest. Touch her upper lip with your nipple, and, when she opens her mouth amply, pull her onto your breast while holding your breast for support the lactation. The baby´s mouth should cover part of the areola (the dark part surrounding the nipple).

Don't be afraid if your newborn have trouble trying to find your nipple. Breastfeeding requires practice and patient. If you are worried, ask a nurse to know you what to do, and ask for visits from a lactation consultant while you stay in the hospital.

Go to the doctor to help a mom learn how to learn lactation to breastfeeding. If you baby has born premature, maybe you are not able to take care of her, but you should start to extract your milk pumping. So your baby can take milk through a recipient until the baby is strong to breasfeeding.

This is very important; remember that breastfeeding is not painful, or at least shouldn´t be. Notice the sensibility in your breast when you are breastfeeding your baby. The baby,s mouth should cover a part of the areola below the nipple.
If breastfeeding hurts, stop the suction inserting a finger between the baby's gums and your nipple and repeat it.If your baby latches on correctly, she will do the work.
